ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The union representing 20,000 New York prison guards is now represented by a law firm that includes former state Attorney General Dennis Vacco.

His Buffalo-based law firm has merged with the Albany-based firm that was representing the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association.

The union says the new merged firm will handle its government relations.

That includes contract negotiations, arbitrations, disciplinary proceedings, employment-related litigation and representation with the governor’s office and Legislature.

Vacco, a Republican, says he has begun working in Albany again.

He says they’re cooperating with an inspector general’s inquiry into the recent prison escape of two killers in northern New York and expect to participate in formulating policies and procedures that follow.

A former federal prosecutor, he was attorney general from 1995 to 1998.
