NEWARK, Del. (AP) - Gov. Jack Markell is signing legislation aimed at improving fire safety for homeowners in Delaware.

The bill to be signed Thursday requires builders of new single-family and two-family homes to provide buyers a cost estimate for installing an automatic sprinkler system. The new law also requires that homebuyers be given information from the State Fire Marshal’s Office about the benefits of automatic sprinklers.

Upon request of the buyer, the builder would be required to install an automatic fire sprinkler system or other requested fire suppression system at the buyer’s expense.

The new law will apply to residential building contracts entered into on or after Jan. 1 of the year following the Fire Marshal’s preparation and promulgation of the written materials.
