CORINTH, Miss. (AP) - Longtime Kossuth High School principal Larry B. Mitchell has been elected superintendent of the Alcorn County schools.

Mitchel defeated incumbent Gina Rogers Smith in Tuesday’s election. The Daily Corinthian reports (https://bit.ly/1W1u3nO ) that complete, but unofficial, returns show Mitchell received 71 percent of the vote.

Mitchell spent eight years as the Alcorn Career & Technology Center director, before serving 19 years as Kossuth principal. Even though he has spent his entire career in education, Mitchell has been retired for more than 17 years.

Smith served one term as superintendent. While in office, the former Biggersville Elementary School principal helped improve the overall district rating and decreased district debt by $5 million.

Mitchell will take office on Jan. 1.
