ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (AP) - Plans for improvements at an activity center for senior citizens in suburban Detroit are getting a boost from the federal government.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Thursday that it’s approving a nearly $1.8 million loan guarantee to St. Clair Shores to provide financial assistance for the Senior Activity Center project. The overhaul has been planned for more than two years.

In a statement, Mayor Kip C. Walby says the loan guarantee puts the city “one step closer to providing our seniors with the state-of-the-art facilities and programming to help keep them ‘ageless.’”

The center was built more than 30 years ago. Under the improvement plans, the center will be renovated and expanded to include a new fitness center and other amenities.
