GREENFIELD, Wis. (AP) - Police say an officer fatally shot a suicidal man who attempted to stab multiple officers with a knife in suburban Milwaukee.

Greenfield Police Chief Brad Wentlandt said at a press conference that officers responded to an apartment complex around 4 p.m. Wednesday after callers reported a distraught man on the balcony of his unit.

Wentlandt says officers negotiated with the man for about an hour and a half.

The chief said the man, who was not immediately identified, made “several suicidal statements.”

A group of officers entered the apartment. Wentlandt says when they tried to take the man into custody, he produced a knife and attempted to stab the officers.

A two-year veteran of the Greenfield department fired his gun, fatally striking the man. There were no injuries to officers.
