PICAYUNE, Miss. (AP) - The Picayune City Council has approved a design plan for a new helicopter taxiway at the local airport.

City Engineer Vernon Moore says the city will ask the Federal Aviation Administration for money to build the taxiway to prevent accidents between helicopters and airplanes.

The Picayune Item reports (https://bit.ly/1W1rlio ) the project required a change to the airport’s Master Plan.

Moore says the design would allow helicopters to move through airport property without crashing into parked airplanes.

The board approved the design phase and a request to submit the design phase application to the FAA.
