TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Republicans in the Ohio House say they’ll soon be organizing a screening panel to review candidates to replace a northern Ohio lawmaker who lost his seat after being convicted of theft.

House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger says Rep. Kirk Schuring of Canton will lead the panel.

An Ottawa County jury last week convicted Rep. Steve Kraus of theft.

The Republican from Sandusky has maintained his innocence and has said that he’s considering his legal options.

His attorney has said he took items from a Port Clinton home to inventory them for auction at the request of a real estate agent.

Kraus was indicted last November, weeks after he won his House seat by defeating former Ohio Democratic Party leader Chris Redfern.
