WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) - The town of Westerly is reviewing a proposal to build a $4.5 million satellite campus for the Community College of Rhode Island.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1DyQ6MH ) the education and job center would serve as a training site for Electric Boat, which is facing a shortage of skilled laborers for two of its facilities.

The project would be built in a vacant freight yard near the Connecticut state line and financed with a combination of public and private money, including nearly $1.8 million from a Greenwich, Connecticut-based nonprofit.

A CCRI spokeswoman says the new center would add to CCRI’s current satellite classes, which operate out of Westerly High School.

Workers could start construction in September, pending approval by the town’s planning board this month, with construction completed by summer of 2016.
