ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Anchorage police say a 14-year-old intentionally set the fire that damaged part of an elementary school playground last week.

KTVA-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1DwAQQM ) that a police statement says the teenager was charged Friday with criminal mischief for setting fire to rubber mulch on the Alpenglow Elementary School playground in Eagle River.

Police say the teen tried to put out the fire but it was reignited about six hours later by the sun’s heat and stronger winds.

Police say they used the school’s surveillance system and other sources to identify the teen suspect.

The Anchorage school district superintendent estimates that replacing the equipment may cost $40,000 to $60,000.
