PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - The city of Petersburg has settled a lawsuit involving a man who sued after he was barred from speaking at a City Council meeting.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia announced the settlement Monday in the lawsuit it filed on behalf of Petersburg activist Linwood Christian.

The ACLU says Christian was barred from speaking at a City Council meeting in January because he hadn’t paid an unrelated city fine.

The ACLU says in a statement that under the terms of the agreement reached last week, the city will pay $3,000 in Christian’s attorney fees and issue a statement on its website about public participation in City Council forums.
