DARIEN, Ga. (AP) - Supporters are pitching in donations after a weekend fire destroyed a 190-square foot structure known as the “Smallest Church in America.”

The Florida Times-Union (https://bit.ly/1ImHOKe ) reports that investigators believe someone was using a torch to cut into a safe where visitors place donations to keep up the church. McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office investigator Justin Lamb says a state fire marshal and a caretaker at the church noticed the damage.

The safe was the only object inside the church to survive the fire, which destroyed small pews and a pulpit.

The church measures 19 feet deep and 9 feet, 6 inches wide and was built in 1949. Supporters began reviewing the damage this week and hope to rebuild by the Christmas holiday.
