ONTARIO, Ore. (AP) - An inmate at the Snake River Correctional Institution has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a cellmate in 2013.

The Argus Observer newspaper reports (https://is.gd/i4X0Vu ) 29-year-old Thomas Riffenburg pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced last week. He is ineligible for parole.

Prosecutor Erin Landis said Riffenburg stomped Jason Gould to death because he believed his cellmate had cooperated with authorities.

Landis said Gould’s relatives oppose capital punishment and supported the sentence.

Riffenburg had been serving time for robbery and attempted assault. His earliest release date before the killing was 2028.

Gould was 23 and had been in prison for less than a year. News reports from 2012 said he was the getaway driver in the robbery of an Albany hotel. His earliest release date was in 2017.
