DALLAS, Ore. (AP) - There’s a new sheriff in Polk County as Sgt. Mark Garton has been sworn in.

The Statesman Journal reports (https://is.gd/QQTtun ) that Garton was sworn in as the 37th Polk County Sheriff on Monday by Circuit Judge Sally Avera.

Garton will serve as interim sheriff until January 2017 when a newly-elected sheriff will take office.

Garton is a sergeant detective in the Polk County Sheriff’s office and has been a part of the office since 1997. Former Sheriff Bob Wolfe retired and recommended Garton as his replacement.

Garton and Sgt. Todd Whitlow, of the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office, have filed as candidates for the Polk County sheriff in the May 2016 election.
