BRUTUS, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say two people have been arrested after one of them slammed a 9-year-old boy into the ground in upstate New York.

Police say it happened Sunday when 26-year-old Cory Pilcher and 31-year-old Kristine MacDowell were taking care of the boy and his sister in Brutus.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office says Pilcher became angry with the boy, picked up him and slammed him into the ground, causing a severe head injury. The boy was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse in critical condition.

Investigators say the pair lied about how the child was hurt.

Pilcher is charged with assault. MacDowell is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and falsely reporting an incident.

It’s unclear if they have attorneys who could comment on the charges.
