CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Southern Illinois has fired head football coach Dale Lennon.

Athletic Director Tommy Bell announced the dismissal Monday and was expected to hold a news conference Tuesday afternoon to discuss the direction of the football program.

The Salukis failed to make the playoffs and were 21-27 in Missouri Valley Football Conference games during the last six of Lennon’s eight seasons with the team. Lennon’s overall record during his eight seasons at SIU was 51-42 and 36-28 in conference play.

Bell thanked Lennon for leading the program with “class and integrity” but said he believed it was time for a change in leadership.

Lennon said in a statement that he was leaving with “deep disappointment and sadness,” and he thanked his supporters in the administration and athletic department for their work.
