PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The Navy’s stealthy new destroyer is already making a port of call.

The future USS Zumwalt sailed past the Portland Head Light and into Portland Harbor on Thursday, just three days after departing Bath Iron Works for sea trials.

The 600-foot, 15,000-ton destroyer visited Maine’s largest city to swap personnel and take on supplies.

Officials say such stops won’t be uncommon as the ship undergoes sea trials this winter. A Bath Iron Works spokesman declined to say whether Thursday’s visit was the first such stop.

Shipbuilders will be making tweaks on the ships over the coming months. The goal is for the shipbuilder to deliver it to the Navy sometime in the coming year.
