PITTSBURGH (AP) - A former farmhand is asking for a federal review after he was sentenced to death for the 2006 rape and murder of a 12-year-old on a Pennsylvania horse farm.

Jeffrey Martin was convicted in 2008 of raping and strangling Gabrielle Bechen after she left her Greensboro home on an all-terrain vehicle to visit a nearby farm.

Police said the 58-year-old New Geneva man confessed. He later recanted and said another man was responsible.

The (Washington) Observer-Reporter reports (https://bit.ly/1Y83wn5 ) that Martin filed documents Tuesday in Pittsburgh federal court requesting a review of his conviction and sentence on constitutional claims. The form did not specify basis for the challenge.

He also filed a motion asking to be appointed an attorney.

The state’s high court upheld Martin’s conviction and sentence last year.
