WACO, Texas (AP) - The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has reprimanded a federal judge in Texas for making unwanted sexual advances toward a court employee more than 15 years ago.

In an order issued last week, Chief Judge Carl Stewart in New Orleans also suspended any new cases from being assigned to U.S. District Judge Walter Smith Jr. for a year.

Stewart says in his order that Smith failed to understand the gravity of his actions. The order also says Smith failed to recuse himself from cases being argued by the lawyer who defended Smith in the sexual-harassment complaint against him.

The complaint against the 75-year-old Smith, who’s based in Waco, was filed last year and contends the unwanted advances occurred in 1998.
