Hillary Clinton is calling for The Citadel to take down its Confederate flag after images recently surfaced showing eight cadets wearing white hoods.

“Symbols of hate create more hate. It’s time for the Confederate flag to come down at The Citadel,” the Democratic presidential front-runner tweeted Friday.

The military college in Charleston, South Carolina, has suspended eight cadets after photos emerged on social media showing them wearing white pillowcases over their heads — resembling members of the KKK. College President John Rosa called the images “offensive and disturbing,” The Hill reported. He said initial reports indicated the cadets were singing carols as part of a “Ghosts of Christmas Past skit.”

The campaign for Democratic presidential rival Sen. Bernard Sanders also weighed in Friday, releasing a statement by South Carolina State Director Chris Covert, Politico reported.

“The South Carolina for Bernie Sanders campaign is deeply disturbed by the photographs of students at The Citadel dressed up in white hoods to resemble members of the Ku Klux Klan. We commend the administration’s swift action to suspend the students involved and are monitoring the investigation closely,” the statement said.

Former Baltimore Mayor and Democratic presidential candidate Martin O’Malley’s campaign has also called for the Confederate Naval Jack’s removal since the photos emerged, a local NBC News affiliate reported

In June, one week after the mass shooting by white supremacist Dylann Roof at a black church in Charleston, The Citadel Board of Visitors voted 9-3 in favor of moving the Confederate Naval Jack from Summerall Chapel. Moving the flag, however, requires an amendment to the Heritage Act by the South Carolina legislature, NBC reported.
