DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A judge has convicted a 20-year-old man of murder for an attack that left a 97-year-old man dead and his wife injured.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1M7VTGt ) Polk County District Court Judge Jeffrey Farrell on Friday convicted Ngor Makuey of first-degree murder in the July 2, 2014, death of Rupert Anderson. He also was found guilty of assault with intent to commit serious injury, robbery and burglary.

Makuey broke into Anderson’s home to rob Anderson and his 94-year-old wife, Harriet. Makuey used a grilling spatula in the attack.

Harriet Anderson survived the attack but died in March.

Makuey’s defense lawyers claimed he was legally insane during the attack.



First-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison. Sentencing is set for Jan. 4.
