CAMERON, Texas (AP) - A Central Texas tax collector is out of a job after being sentenced to three years of probation for trying to steal county funds.

The Eagle (https://bit.ly/1OWm1ua ) newspaper reports Milam (MY’-luhm) County Tax Assessor-Collector Kolette Barrett Morgan resigned, effective Friday.

The 46-year-old Morgan pleaded no contest to attempted theft of $1,500 to $20,000 by a public servant.

Morgan, who was fined $2,500 and must pay court costs, worked for the Milam County tax assessor’s office in Cameron for 17 years. She led the office since 2010 and was required to resign as part of her plea.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office investigated the state jail felony case against Morgan. Further details of the case weren’t immediately released.

Cameron is 70 miles northeast of Austin.
