ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta Ballet’s “Nutcracker” returns for its 56th season.

The production kicked off Friday night at the Fox Theatre and will celebrate the 20th anniversary of artistic director John McFall, who will be ending his tenure with the company next year. The show runs through Dec. 28, featuring the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra and the Georgia Youth Choir.

McFall is known for transforming the Atlanta Ballet.

Each show will be set in a Moorish decor with a series of props, including 20 pounds of snow and a 38-foot Christmas tree.

“Nutcracker” was introduced by the Atlanta Ballet in 1959, performing George Balanchine’s version of the tale. In that year, the company was the only one outside of the New York City Ballet that was allowed to perform the signature piece.
