WASHINGTON (AP) - Supporters of District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser have returned most of the contributions to the big-bucks political-action committee that they decided to shut down amid criticism.

A report filed Friday shows that FreshPAC has returned more than $276,000 in contributions and has just $7,600 left in the bank.

The committee was the first of its kind in the District. It took advantage of a city law that allowed unlimited contributions during non-election years. Bowser’s supporters said they planned to use the money to back D.C. Council candidates who support her agenda.

The committee accepted contributions from people doing business with the city, and some council members said that created a perception of pay-to-play politics. They’ve vowed to change the law that allowed it to accept unlimited contributions.
