NEW BOSTON, Texas (AP) - A grand jury has indicted a Texas prisoner in the beating death of a guard escorting the handcuffed inmate to a cell at the Telford Unit.

The Texarkana Gazette (https://bit.ly/1Rezjnx ) reports Billy Joel Tracy was indicted Thursday on a capital murder charge.

Corrections Officer Timothy Davison was attacked July 15 while escorting Tracy from a dayroom back to his cell at the prison in New Boston.

Investigators say Tracy slipped one hand out of a cuff, grabbed Davison’s tray slot bar and use it to pummel the guard. Tray slot bars are used to manipulate the opening in cell doors at mealtime.

Tracy is serving life in prison for robbery and aggravated assault from Rockwall County. He has several convictions for assaults on corrections officers.
