HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes have put off their decision on where to locate a joint casino venture in Connecticut to compete with a planned Springfield, Massachusetts, casino.

MMCT Venture, the company formed by the tribes, said Friday that after meeting with town officials, it needs more time for a decision. The deadline was Tuesday.

The statement did not provide details. It said the tribes are evaluating proposals and the economic impact of each site in East Hartford, East Windsor, Hartford and Windsor Locks.

East Hartford Mayor Marcia Leclerc and Windsor Locks First Selectman J. Christopher Kervick said tribal leaders wanted more time to investigate proposals.

The chairmen of the tribes that run the Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods casinos said last month the deadline can be flexible.

The legislature must approve a third casino.

This story has been corrected to show that the four municipalities include East Hartford, not West Hartford.
