COLUMBUS, N.C. (AP) - Polk County authorities are investigating whether a former sheriff’s office employee mishandled evidence.

Lt. Lowell Griffin told The Times-News of Hendersonville (https://bit.ly/1Y56iyT) that the former head of the evidence and property room reported the potential problem last month, saying he had a substance abuse problem.

Griffin says Christopher Byers was placed on administrative leave in November, and his employment was terminated Thursday.

District Greg Newman says an audit by independent company began Friday and could take up to three weeks to complete. Newman says Byers hasn’t been charged.

Defense Attorney Steve Lindsay says people are working to make sure Byers gets the treatment he needs and that the administration of justice isn’t compromised.
