ENDEAVOR, Wis. (AP) - The Wisconsin State Patrol says a firefighter has died after he was struck by a vehicle while tending to a crash in central Wisconsin.

The patrol says the crash happened just before 4:30 p.m. Friday on Interstate 39 when a car entered the median near Endeavor.

According to the patrol, fire and rescue personnel were parked on the median, tending to the initial crash, when a southbound vehicle entered the median and struck the firefighter.

The firefighter was airlifted to a Portage hospital and then to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, where he later died.

The patrol identifies the firefighter as 56-year-old Lawrence Millard of Endeavor. His department affiliation was not immediately released.

This story has been corrected to correct the firefighter’s age to 56 instead of 46.
