SALEM, Va. (AP) - Charles Harris rushed for 181 yards and Galax’s lone touchdown and Riverheads failed on a 2-point conversion pass on the game’s final play Saturday, preserving the Gladiators’ 7-6 victory and first Virginia High School League 1A state football championship.
Harris carried 28 times and finished with 3,236 yards for the season, the second-best single season in VHSL history. His touchdown came on the opening drive of the game for the Gladiators (11-4), and the Galax defense did the rest, stifling the Maroon Tide until the final minutes of the game.
Riverheads (13-1), held to just four first downs in the first 56 minutes of the game, started at its own 32-yard-line with 1:14 remaining. Two long completions by Garret Campbell, the latter a 43-yard pass to Tyler Smith, set up an 8-yard TD pass from Campbell to Taz Miller on fourth down as time expired.
This story has been corrected to show that Galax’s record is 11-4, not 10-4.
