MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - A Mason City man who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count for killing three city-owned trees has been fined $1,000.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1NMMCch ) that 63-year-old Robert Willemsen pleaded guilty to fourth-degree criminal mischief in Cerro Gordo County District Court this week. He had originally been charged with a felony count of second-degree criminal mischief.

Authorities say he cut rings around the trunks of the trees on Aug. 14, leaving them unable to absorb water and killing them. Willemsen has not explained why he vandalized the trees located right outside his home, but on city property.
