MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont farmers have just a few more days to spread manure on fields before a winter ban takes effect.

The state’s annual winter manure spreading ban starts Tuesday.

The Vermont Agency of Agriculture says research has shown that manure applications on frozen ground can increase the runoff potential.

During the ban - which runs to April 1 - farmers must either store manure in a holding structure or stack it in a way that will not impact water quality.

The Agriculture Agency says exemptions are available in emergency situations, such as structural failure of a waste storage facility.
