GRIFFIN, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say three people have been killed in a Spalding County house fire.

Griffin Fire Department Chief Tommy Jones told local media that an elderly couple died after a fire Saturday night. Officials say the couple’s son lived nearby and was also killed when he tried rescuing them.

Jones tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution it appears that the fire started in a back bedroom, but the cause of the blaze is unclear.

Jones says the house was equipped with smoke detectors and the home sustained major damage.
