DETROIT (AP) - Archbishop Allen Vigneron is opening a Holy Door of Mercy at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit.

A ceremony takes place during Mass on Sunday. The door is being designated as part of the worldwide Year of Mercy instituted by Pope Francis.

The Archdiocese of Detroit and the cathedral have created a prayerful, pilgrimage experience for those who wish to enter through the Holy Door. It involves praying through various stations and making a commitment to pray for the intentions of a fellow Christian.

The door will be open each first Friday of the month from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and each Sunday from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. until the close of the jubilee year on Nov. 20, 2016.
