RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A murderer dies of natural causes on North Carolina’s death row 24 years after strangling a Randolph County woman.

The state Department of Public Safety says convicted killer James Edward Williams died Friday at Central Prison’s hospital. He was 53 and had been hospitalized inside the maximum-security prison’s walls for several weeks.

He was sentenced to death in 1993 for the beating and strangulation of Elvie Rhodes in Trinity two years earlier.

North Carolina hasn’t carried out an execution since 2006 due to various legal appeals.
