MINOT, N.D. (AP) - A new elementary school under construction in Minot will bear the name of former governor and current U.S. Sen. John Hoeven.

The new school is expected to be open for classes next fall. Voters approved funding for the new school in April 2014 as part of a $39.5 million bond referendum.

The school district says the elementary is designed to provide four sections of each grade level to accommodate the increasing number of students in the surrounding areas.

The library within John Hoeven Elementary will be named after longtime Minot educator Lowell Latimer.

Hoeven, a Republican, served as North Dakota’s governor from 2000 to 2010, when he resigned after winning a seat in the U.S. Senate.
