HOUMA, La. (AP) - A Thibodaux man convicted of raping and impregnating an 11-year-old girl was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

WWL-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1jWJlLm ) that prosecutor Bud Barnes says 27-year-old Joseph Riney was sentenced Friday.

Riney was convicted of aggravated rape in November after a two-day trial in which a state police crime lab analyst testified that DNA evidence linked him to the crime and the baby.

He was arrested in January 2014 following accusations he forced the child to have sex with him multiple times at her Houma home until she turned 11. The child was pregnant when Riney was arrested, officials said. The baby was given up for adoption.

During the trial, Riney’s lawyer Heather Fairchild questioned the validity of the DNA evidence and the consistency of the girl’s statements.
