MONACA, Pa. (AP) - Barge traffic on a western Pennsylvania river remains on hold as authorities assess damage a day after a boat crashed into a dam.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the tow boat ran into a gate at the Montgomery Locks and Dam on the Ohio River, about 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh in Monaca.

Authorities are investigating the Sunday afternoon accident and looking at how badly the main lock was damaged. A secondary lock was closed for repairs, leading to the shutdown of all river traffic.

It’s not clear in which direction the boat was traveling or who owned it. There is no timeline for when river traffic might reopen.

The dam sees about 300 commercial boats each month.
