BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Officials in Buffalo say a broken fire hydrant hampered firefighters battling a blaze that destroyed one home and severely damaged another.

The fire broke out early Sunday afternoon at a home on the city’s East Side. Fire officials say when firefighters arrived, they attempted to hook up a hose to a hydrant across the street from the burning home.

Officials say a crack in the hydrant’s threading prevented it from being used. Firefighters had to use a hydrant located a block away. By then, the flames had spread to a home next door.

The house where the fire started was destroyed, while the neighboring one sustained at least $60,000 in damage.

Fire department officials say they’ll be discussing the non-functioning hydrant with the city’s Public Works Department.

No one was hurt in the fire.
