ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - Aberdeen residents head to the polls on Tuesday for a special election to decide on a bond financing proposal for the construction of a new public library.

The Aberdeen American News reports (https://bit.ly/1WfFQlg ) that the City Council adopted the bond financing ordinance Sept. 28. According to the plan, the Alexander Mitchell Public Library Foundation will pay for $1.5 million in bonds and the city will finance $6.2 million over the course of 20 years.

Foundation President Troy McQuillen says a new library is important for continuing to grow the Aberdeen community.

Opponents of the library’s funding put together a successful petition drive to refer the matter to voters.
