BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - Romanian lawmakers have voted to ban all advertising of prescription drugs and radio and television advertising of over-the-counter medicines in a bid to stop what they say is harmful self-diagnosis.

Senators voted 100-7 Monday to stop the growing number of medicine ads on television and radio, which Senator Alexandru Vegh claims have “a negative and deceptive influence.”

“Patients shouldn’t treat themselves … based on what they heard on the radio or TV,” he said.

The measure says the National Medicine Agency will have to approve publicity for non-prescription drugs in other media, such as newspapers.

President Klaus Iohannis needs to sign off on the legislation for it to become law.
