SUTHERLAND, Neb. (AP) - A man has died after being severely burned in what officials have deemed a farm accident.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office tells North Platte television station KNOP-TV (https://bit.ly/1QhatU0 ) that 81-year-old Fred Maire was badly burned Saturday afternoon while lighting a fire outside his home.

Deputies say Maire was trying to light some trash on fire in a burn barrel when part of his clothing caught fire.

Deputies and rescue workers from Sutherland and North Platte responded to the accident, and Maire was taken to a North Platte hospital.

Officials say Maire died while being treated for his burns.
