FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - The trial has been set for a formerly homeless man accused in the shotgun slaying of a man in west Fort Smith this summer.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1J6jzuV ) that Dwight Neal Hawley will go to trial the week of March 21. He has been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree terroristic threatening and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Authorities say Hawley admitted to killing 20-year-old Carlos Araujo-Mejia with a 20-guage shotgun.

Police say Araujo-Mejia and his girlfriend, Mindy Garrett, went to drink alcohol in Hawley’s shelter in the woods when an argument broke out. Hawley allegedly threatened to kill Garrett, which escalated the argument between Hawley and Araujo-Mejia.

Garrett fled to a nearby house to call police.
