SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials say an off-duty deputy riding a department motorcycle was hurt when he crashed while trying to avoid hitting a coyote in the road.

Lt. Derek Sabatini says the deputy was ending his shift at the sheriff’s Santa Clarita Station late Monday when the accident occurred.

Sabatini says the deputy managed to avoid the coyote but lost control of the bike.

City News Service says the deputy was hospitalized after complaining of pain. The extent of his injuries was not known.
