HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is directing state of Connecticut flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Stratford Rep. Terry Backer, who died at the age of 61.

Malloy called his fellow Democrat on Tuesday a “larger than life crusader who was passionate about Stratford” and was dedicated to preserving the Long Island Sound and waterways.

A Long Island Sound fisherman and the founding Long Island Soundkeeper charged with protecting the Sound, Backer battled brain cancer for five years. The Connecticut Post reported he died late Monday in Bridgeport Hospital.

Backer served 12 terms in the House of Representatives.

House Speaker Brendan Sharkey said Baker was “always willing to speak against the tide when he felt it was needed,” but was a team player who understood the need for consensus.

This story corrects that Backer died late Monday, not Tuesday morning.
