ALTAMONT, Tenn. (AP) - A Grundy County teacher has been arrested on rape charges involving a 14-year-old girl.

Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum tells media outlets that 41-year-old Tommy Andrews was arrested Sunday. Andrews is charged with one count of aggravated statutory rape and one count of aggravated statutory rape by an authority figure.

Shrum says the victim was not a current student of Andrews.

Grundy County school system personnel didn’t return requests for comment Tuesday from the Chattanooga Times Free Press, but Shrum said Andrews, who’s a teacher at Swiss Memorial Elementary School, has been suspended. Swiss Memorial is located in the city of Gruetli-Laager.

Shrum says the sheriff’s office received a complaint last week which caused it to look deeper into the issue. It’s unclear whether Andrews has an attorney.
