BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a convenience store clerk has been shot to death during a robbery in Bessemer.

Al.com reports (https://bit.ly/1Mh4Hdc) that the holdup happened in the early morning hours Tuesday at a Kangaroo Express store.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the slain clerk as 27-year-old Trenton James Way of Dolomite.

Bessemer police Deputy Chief Mike Roper says police were responding to a report of a robbery in progress when they found the store clerk behind the counter, wounded by gunshots.

Roper tells Al.com that there were also shots fired outside of the store, but it doesn’t appear anyone else was struck.

Roper said investigators are trying to review surveillance video.
