NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Justice Department says two doctors and a nurse have been sentenced to federal prison in a $50 million health care fraud scheme in New Orleans.

Prosecutors said the three carried out a 10-year scheme that involved falsely certifying that thousands of Medicare recipients needed in-home nursing or therapy services.

U.S. District Judge Sarah Vance on Wednesday sentenced 67-year-old Dr. Barbara Smith of Metairie to six years and eight months in prison. Vance sentenced 69-year-old Dr. Roy Berkowitz of Slldell to five years and four months.

Sixty-seven-year-old Beverley Breaux, a New Orleans registered nurse, was sentenced to four years and two months.

The Justice Department says Smith must pay more than $9.4 million in restitution. Berkowitz owes nearly $5 million and Breaux more than $2 million.
