LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - City leaders in Lawton have agreed to ask the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to build a fence along a stretch of Interstate 44 to discourage people from walking across the roadway.

The Lawton Constitution reports (https://bit.ly/1Mh3q5M ) that three people have been killed in the past two years while trying to walk across a stretch of interstate near East Gore Boulevard. Officials say the deaths occurred because people were walking to nearby businesses and were struck by vehicles.

The most recent death happened on Thanksgiving.

City officials say they’re also exploring a long-term idea of a pedestrian crossover.
