DETROIT (AP) - Two small businesses in Detroit are getting $100,000 grants for what is described as their innovation and ingenuity.

New Economy Initiative, a special project of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, announced Thursday that Public Lumber & Millwork and Russell Street Deli were selected as small-business winners of the 2015 NEIdeas $100k Challenge.

They were picked based on growth opportunity, their history and mission, neighborhood impact and good financial standing. The funding will allow Public Lumber to add and train new employees. Russell Street Deli plans to develop new products and boost advertising.

The New Economy Initiative has awarded more than $1 million to more than 60 existing small businesses through the NEIdeas Challenge, which started in May 2014.
