LIBERTY, Miss. (AP) - Amite County School District’s superintendent is seeking a pay raise.

The Enterprise-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1m88nJ2) Superintendent Scotty Whittington asked trustees for a raise at last week’s school board meeting. Whittington says he deserves a salary comparable to what other superintendents in southwest Mississippi make.

Whittington presented annual superintendent salaries in 2014-15, comparing pay in nearby counties to his own. His salary of $77,765 is below that of area superintendents in counties including South Pike, McComb, North Pike and Lincoln. He says the average area superintendent pay is $115,227.

Whittington didn’t give a specific amount he was requesting. Trustee James Copeland says the board should have a decision on the salary issue by the Jan. 14 meeting.

Whittington, who won his election in November, will begin serving his second term in January.
