SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - President Barack Obama has appointed a former Centerville mayor to be a federal judge in Utah.

The White House said in a statement Wednesday that Ronald G. Russell is a commercial and real estate lawyer in Salt Lake City who was a member of the city council in Centerville before serving as its mayor from 2006 to 2013.

Russell also served as a law clerk at the U.S. District Court in Utah in 1984. Russell is a shareholder at the firm of Parr, Brown, Gee and Loveless, where he has worked for more than three decades.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Weber State University and a law degree from the University of Utah.

Russell must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
